Annular Solar Eclipse – 10 May 2013

The moon will block part of the sun Thursday to create a potentially amazing "ring of fire" and you can watch the celestial sight live online. The "ring of fire" solar eclipse — known as an annular solar eclipse — will be viewable (weather permitting) over certain areas of Australia and islands in the Southern Pacific Ocean where the local time will be Friday. If you don't happen to live in those parts of the world, however, you can still catch the cosmic show as the online Slooh Space Camera will host a free webcast featuring live views of the eclipse today, beginning at 5:30 p.m. EDT (2130 GMT).

Deep Space Industries Announces Plans For Asteroid Prospecting Spacecraft

Startup exploration company Deep Space Industries (DSI) has announced ambitious plans to launch a series of asteroid prospecting spacecraft from 2015 onward. Still seeking additional investors and sponsors, DSI says the initial series of FireFly craft will scout out potential target asteroids for resource exploitation following launch as hosted payloads on larger communications satellites. These initial prospecting missions will last two to six months and will pave the way for a ...

First Space Test Passed By Galileo’s Search And Rescue System

(ESA) The first switch-on of a Galileo search and rescue package shows it to be working well. Its activation begins a major expansion of the space-based Cospas–Sarsat network, which brings help to air and sea vessels in distress. The second pair of Europe’s Galileo navigation satellites – launched together on October 12 last year – are the first of the constellation to host SAR search and rescue repeaters. These can pick ...

How Many Resources Are Left in the World?

This image from New Scientist a few years back is making its rounds again: It's interesting but also misleading -- the data is lacking and not explained very well. For more "convincing" data, check this out: How Much is Left? Also, an interesting ancillary story to note is that of Simon and Ehrlich. From Wikipedia: "Julian L. Simon and Paul Ehrlich entered in a famous scientific wager in 1980, betting on ...

Annular Solar Eclipse – 20 May 2012

An annular solar eclipse will take place on May 20, 2012 (May 21, 2012 for local time in Eastern Hemisphere), with a magnitude of 0.9439. A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes betweenEarth and the Sun, thereby totally or partially obscuring the image of the Sun for a viewer on Earth. An annular solar eclipse occurs when the Moon’s apparent diameter is smaller than the Sun, causing the Sun to look like an ...

Free-Floating Planets in the Milky Way Outnumber Stars by Factors of Thousands: Life-Bearing Planets May Exist in Vast Numbers

Researchers say life-bearing planets may exist in vast numbers in the space between stars in the Milky Way. A few hundred trillion free-floating life-bearing Earth-sized planets may exist in the space between stars in the Milky Way. So argues an international team of scientists led by Professor Chandra Wickramasinghe, Director of the Buckingham Centre for Astrobiology at the University of Buckingham, UK. Their findings are published online in the Springer ...

NASA – Pursuit of Light

Perhaps more than all other federal agencies, NASA tells stories about big things: big places, big data, big ideas. Using extraordinarily high resolution data sets from some of the most innovative and powerful scientific instruments ever built, the media team at NASA Goddard presents PURSUIT OF LIGHT. The presentation showcases top level goals of NASA's Science Mission Directorate, with an eye toward capturing the imagination of mainstream audiences. Data visualizations ...

The Moon As A Mirror

Scientists are planning to use NASA's Hubble Space Telescope to observe next month's historic transit of Venus across the sun's face -- but there's a twist: Researchers can't point Hubble anywhere near the sun, because our star's bright light could damage the telescope's super-sensitive instruments. So Hubble will watch the June 5-6 Venus transit by using the moon as a mirror. The goal is to see if Hubble can determine ...
